Press Release Summary: UCLA study shows many kids misdiagnosed with ADHD

Press Release Body: MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. - Ashley Tutors (www.ashleytutors.com),
launched in October 2007, offers one-on-one in-home academic tutoring to Washington,
D.C. area students in grades kindergarten through 12. Based on the teaching methods
of Ashley Fagel, a Maryland certified teacher working in Montgomery County, MD.,
every tutor on the Ashley Tutors team works with Fagel on how to best utilize
kinesthetic learning. With the use of kinesthetic methods, any team member of
Ashley Tutors can make everything from specific homework to theoretical assignments
entertaining in their one-on-one sessions.
Kinesthetic learners account for 45 percent of the population, according to Muneera
Spence, Oregon State University professor. Students who are kinesthetic learners
can be misdiagnosed with ADHD. A recent University of California at Los Angeles
study of Finnish adolescents showed that only about half of children diagnosed with
attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, actually exhibit the cognitive
defects commonly associated with the condition. The study also revealed that the
prevalence and symptoms of the disorder are similar in different populations whether
or not medicine was used.
The Ashley Tutors team focuses on a kinesthetic learning method that allows a
student a two-minute motor break for every eight minutes of learning. Many students
find learning while sitting quietly at a desk so restricting that all their energy
is focused on keeping still. "The kinesthetic methods we use appeal to most
students who have a hard time sitting still for an hour," said Josh Chernikoff, the
Ashley Tutors team member in charge of finding the most experienced and energetic
tutors possible. "Many students are kinesthetic learners who benefit from this
philosophy, which encourages students to move physically in order to focus their
energy on the academic task."
Another important and unique aspect of the Ashley Tutors philosophy is making sure
every student knows their tutor believes in them. With this support, students
increase their self-esteem and develop confidence as a learner. "The goal of Ashley
Tutors is to develop a unique, individualized and very interactive strategy to meet
the needs of each student," said Chernikoff.
"Ashley Tutors really identifies the strengths and needs for each student," said a
parent from Farmland Elementary School in Rockville, MD. "They also structured a
program to fit my child\'s learning style. From the first session, the tutor was
very personable and dedicated to the success of my child."
